Solid Modeling and Rapid Prototyping

Engineers at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) work with engine and engine component manufacturers to solve their problems. Whether designing a single component or a completely new engine, SwRI has the people, the processes, and the tools to solve the most difficult engine challenges.

Rapid prototype models, such as this laminated object manufacturing (LOM) model of a large engine cylinder head and rocker support, enable SwRI designers to quickly assess the suitability of a design for fit and function.

SwRI designers utilize advanced parametric solid modeling to design engine components such as this cylinder head and valve train. The solid models are then the reference database for analytical design verification and manufacturing data.

The Process

SwRI is ready to be a partner in every phase of the product development cycle. State-of-the-art design and analysis tools are used to provide cost-effective, manufacturable solutions. Solid model CAD databases become the foundation for a closely coupled series of design and analysis functions. Efficient transition to manufacturing is accomplished through rapid prototyping of components and production tool patterns, tool paths for prototype and production machining, design of fixtures for manufacturing and assembly, and gage design for quality assurance. SwRI can help reduce the time to market by overcoming challenges through accurate solutions and high technology tools.

The People

SwRI offers extensive experience and expertise in:

  • Component reliability analysis
  • Computational fluid dynamics
  • Kinematic and dynamic analysis
  • Flow network analysis
  • Finite element analysis
  • Combustion analysis
  • CAD/solid modeling
  • Rapid prototyping
  • Cycle simulation
  • Conceptual engine design
