Background - The optimal design of Auxiliary Emissions Control Devices (AECD) is key to competitively meeting increasingly stringent emissions standards. However, extensive use of vehicle and engine dynamometers to evaluate AECD performance can be time-consuming and cost-prohibitive. Therefore, rapid and cost-effective methods to screen catalyst formulations and regeneration strategies are often accomplished by simulating exhaust streams from engines. To successfully meet the challenges of future emission regulations, time, and cost constraints, it is essential to develop a Universal Synthetic Gas Reactor (USGR) system to evaluate catalyst performance for both gasoline and diesel applications, as well as natural gas, Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) and others.
Approach - The objective of this proposed internal research and development (IR&D) work is to develop a universal synthetic gas reactor (USGR) system that would enable the simulation of gasoline, diesel, and any alternative fueled engine exhaust system for aftertreatment catalyst or trap evaluation. The system controls exhaust temperature, pressure, flow rate, and gas compositions. In addition, the system is able to simulate selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst and lean NOx trap (LNT) regeneration cycles through controlled ammonia (NH3) or hydrocarbon (HC) injection. Thus, the USGR system is able to test three-way catalyst (TWC), DeNOx catalyst, LNT, SCR and other catalyst performance.
Accomplishments - The USGR system hardware and controls have been established. Catalysts including TWC, LNT and SCR have been tested using the USGR, and the results are correlated with the results from a gasoline engine (for TWC) and a diesel engine (for LNT and SCR). A set of standard operating procedures have been established for the evaluation of TWC, LNT, SCR and other catalysts.
