Background - Manufacturers of diesel-powered light-duty vehicles in the United States and in Europe face very stringent emissions regulations in the near future. In Europe, more than 50 percent of light duty vehicles are diesels. With U.S. Tier 2 regulations, diesel vehicles are to have the same ultra-low emissions levels as gasoline vehicles. Many vehicle manufacturers, especially outside the U.S., intend to develop Tier 2 Bin 5 compliant diesel vehicles for the U.S. market. However, how a diesel-powered, light-duty vehicle calibrated for the European market performs under U.S. emission test cycles remains an unknown for most manufacturers.

SwRI has separately demonstrated technologies to meet Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions on a light-duty passenger vehicle. To reduce engine-out NOx and particulate matter (PM) emissions, the engine combustion and control systems were optimized. A lean NOx trap (LNT) was used for NOx control, and diesel particulate filters (DPF) were used for PM control.

The objectives of this project were to examine a Euro IV certified vehicle under U.S. emission test cycles (FTP-75 and US06) for emissions and fuel economy. The results were compared with SwRI’s Tier 2 Bin 5 demonstration vehicle mentioned above. The emissions, fuel economy, and engine operating parameters from the two different calibrations (Euro IV and U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5) were compared to provide guidance for development of a U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 compliant vehicle from a Euro IV compliance vehicle.

Approach - A 2006 Renault Megane with a Renault 2.0 dCi M9R engine was evaluated for emissions and fuel economy over US FTP-75 and US06 driving cycles on a light-duty vehicle dynamometer. Engine control parameters were monitored and recorded during the test cycles.

Accomplishments - The following objectives were accomplished during the project.

A 2006 Renault Megane with a Renault 2.0 dCi M9R engine was evaluated for emissions and fuel economy over US FTP-75 and US06 driving cycles. The results were compared with those from SwRI’s Bin 5 demonstration vehicle. It was found that the European calibration vehicle was not able to meet U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 regulations with respect to NOx and PM emissions. Compared with SwRI’s Tier 2 Bin 5 capable vehicle, more EGR must be used with additional LNT for NOx reduction and DPF for PM reduction.

The Renault light-duty diesel vehicle can likely meet U.S. Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions standards using SwRI’s technology, which includes:

  • Alternative combustion (low temperature combustion, PCCI combustion).
  • Air flow dominant engine control logic.
  • Combustion system optimization for low NOx, low PM PCCI combustion.
  • Four-way catalyst system (diesel oxidation catalyst + catalyzed DPF + Lean NOx trap).
