Mobile/Wireless Communications

Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) engineers have expertise in numerous facets of mobile/wireless communications including embedded communication systems design, mobile network topology development, and advanced mobile communication technologies research. A core capability for mobile communications at SwRI is developing network infrastructures and embedded end devices for intelligent transportation systems (ITS), government agencies, and commercial partners.

TECHNOLOGIES

SwRI engineers develop and integrate technologies to fill the gap between new requirements and existing communication systems. Some of the technologies used to develop these solutions have included:

  • Wireless Ethernet networks
  • Mobile networking technologies (mobile IP)
  • Mobile ad hoc networks
  • Mobile satellite communications
  • Cellular communications
  • Wired ITS networks (T1, DSL, ISDN)
  • Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC)
  • Embedded system development
  • Embedded sensor development
  • Embedded system communications
  • Integration with advanced traffic management systems (ATMS)

Wireless video, data and audio communications are transmitted to and from mobile ambulance.

This computer system and enclosure are used in the Bus Incident Monitoring System (BIMS) developed by SwRI to help provide better response during incidents.

SwRI-developed software on a hand-held device is attached to a vehicle’s CAN bus to extract and report vehicle information to traffic management centers.

Hospital receives real-time patient video and vital data.
