Emission Reduction Intercept and Control (ERIC) System

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has developed a novel system for modifying vehicle emissions through computer-controlled signal interception.

With increasingly stringent exhaust emission regulations, aftertreatment component manufacturers are being required not only to develop exhaust system components, but to integrate these components into the engine/vehicle calibration process. Previous integration solutions involved using bias circuits to manipulate signals to and from the electronic control unit (ECU), or installation and development of a prototype ECU. With the increasing complexity and adaptive learning capabilities of the ECU, the use of simple bias circuits has become increasingly difficult. Prototype ECUs are ideal for engine development, but generally exceed the requirements for aftertreatment development. A modest approach between these two extremes is now required.

SwRI has developed a computer-controlled device to work in conjunction with an OEM ECU. The Emission Reduction Intercept and Control (ERIC) system is programmed to monitor engine conditions, detect targeted driving modes, self-activate, modify a specific engine subsystem control, and deactivate when the targeted mode has passed.
