Gear Oil Scuff Test (GOST)

The Gear Oil Scuff Test (GOST) developed by Southwest Research Institute is a cost-effective procedure that may be used to accurately predict full-scale gear tests.

Good correlation has been demonstrated for a large matrix of oils with both the Forschungstelle für Záhnräder und Getriebebau (FZG) and Ryder gear test procedures.

The GOST procedure consists of a laboratory scale wear test to define the boundary lubricating characteristics of the oil. The Ryder and FZG load stage results are then predicted using mathematical models which incorporate the laboratory wear test result, the kinematic viscosity at 100°C, and the respective gear tooth geometry.

The GOST procedure has been accepted as SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) 4978.

The GOST test accurately predicts the load-carrying capacity of a test oil when operated in the FZG gears shown here.
