Fall 1996 Technology Today®
About the Cover
U.S. Air Force pilots undergo extensive training to master the
judgement and decision-making skills they will need in critical situations. They must be
able to process information quickly -- to constantly set and adjust priorities while
responding to multiple indicators and coordinating operations through various
communication systems. The cover portrays a scene as might be viewed by an Air Force pilot
conducting a mission rehearsal training exercise in a simulator. Advanced modeling and
visualization techniques enhance student learning by producing high-fidelity, realistic
images that closely match live training scenarios. A variety of training and simulation
technologies developed at SwRI are discussed in the article. The image of the F-16
simulator shown in the composite cover photograph is used courtesy of the Mnch
Publishing Group, Bonn, Germany.
