SwRI's shear stability evaluation apparatus

The shear stability laboratory test method CEC L-14-A-93 and ASTM D 6278 offered by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) evaluates the shear stability of polymer-containing oils.

CEC L-14-A-93 Test Parameters

Polymer-containing oil is sheared by passing 170 mL through a diesel-injector nozzle and a two-cylinder fuel injection pump system for 30 cycles. Kinematic viscosities are measured on the sheared and unsheared oil samples in accordance with ASTM D 445 at 100°C. A percentage reduction is calculated from the viscosity results generated. The injection system is adjusted to ensure a viscosity reduction of 2.8 ± 0.1 mm²/s for a specific reference fluid. Once the equipment has been calibrated, other polymer-containing fluids may be run to evaluate the shear stability.

The injection system is adjusted to ensure a viscosity reduction of 2.8 ± 0.1 mm²/s for a specific reference fluid.

 

Once the equipment has been calibrated, other polymer-containing fluids may be run to evaluate the shear stability.

 

Pass/Fail Criteria

The pass/fail criteria include maximum variation of characteristics after immersion for 7 days in fresh oil without pre-aging.
