SwRI has developed and proven a system for trend analysis of a variety of lubricants extracted from many different types of fleets.

ASTM D6594 is a corrosion laboratory test method offered by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) for use in testing diesel engine lubricants to determine their tendency to corrode various metals, specifically alloys of lead and copper, which are commonly used in cam followers and bearings.

ACEA 2008 Specifications

The corrosion test for heavy-duty diesel engines is part of ACEA Specifications:

  • E2-96 (Issue 4)

  • E4-08

  • E6-08

  • E7-08

ASTM D 6594 Test Parameters

Four metal coupons of copper, lead, tin, and phosphor bronze are immersed in a measured amount of engine oil. The oil, at an elevated temperature of 135°C, is blown with air.

At the end of the ASTM D 6594 test, the coupons and the stressed oil are examined to detect corrosion.

Pass/Fail Criteria

At the end of the test, the coupons and the stressed oil are examined to detect corrosion. Pass limit for for E7-08 is 100 ppm lead and pass limits for E9-08 are 20 ppm for copper and a copper specimin rating no worse than 3.
