Approaching each project with a focus on the product and system(s) within which it operates constitutes the product-centered approach used by the Engine Design section at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). Whether a single component or an entire engine assembly is involved, an understanding of the product system is required to maximize the results.

Software simulation tools are used in combination with hardware testing and historical product experience to produce more accurate results which reduce the overall time and cost of development. SwRI's Product Development Risk Assessment Process is a key component of this strategy.
