Example of finite element analysis

To evaluate the structural integrity of the cylinder head design as well as its ability to manage the heat of combustion to eliminate "hot spots" that could cause early equipment failure, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) engineers use finite element analysis (FEA). Structural analyses include assembly loads, combustion pressure loads, and the stresses imposed by thermal growth. FEA displacements are used to evaluate the uniformity of combustion seal loading by the cylinder head.
