Orbital motion, main bearing 5

From relatively simple orbital analyses to more complex surface and subsurface stress analyses, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI)  bearing and tribological simulation capabilities help to quantify the sensitivity of the bearing to design parameters so the bearing geometry can be optimized.

Optimizing the bearing geometry allows the engine design and analysis engineers to predict crankshaft dynamic behavior and to analyze bearing performance for:

  • Bearing forces

  • Minimum film thickness

  • Oil film pressure

  • Journal orbits

  • Oil film friction/power loss

  • Oil leakage flow rates

  • Oil film temperature rise

  • Film wet region and cavitation areas
