The combination of superior fuel economy and durability has made diesel engines popular worldwide. Because these engines can emit large amounts of ozone-forming constituents and particulates, they are subject to increasingly stringent regulations that require continual improvements in the combustion process. Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) engineers and technicians help engine manufacturers and suppliers meet these regulations and emissions standards.
Diesel Engine Combustion Research ServicesA comprehensive range of services are available, including:
Gaseous and Particulate Emissions ResearchThe group specializes in reducing gaseous and particulate emissions from diesel engines over various cycles by:
SwRI supports engine manufacturers as they finalize their 2002/2004 and Euro IV (HD) strategies and plan for the 2007 and Euro V (HD) and Tier II (LD) emission standards.Experienced SwRI staff improve diesel combustion and reduce emissions caused by light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty engine applications including:
Clean Diesel V ProgramSwRI also conducts the Clean Diesel V program, a 4-year, annually renewable, cooperative research program targeting engine-out emissions of NOx + NMHC = 0.2 g/hp-hr and PM = 0.01 g/hp-hr. Membership in the Clean Diesel V program includes manufacturers of heavy-duty and light-duty engines and component suppliers from around the world.
Internal Research and DevelopmentInternal research and development (IR&D) is performed at SwRI to gain expertise in new areas and to develop skills needed by our clients. IR&D project results are usually presented to clients in both public and private forums. A list of 2008 IR&D projects is available.
