Emissions and fuel consumption trade-off comparison for gasoline- and diesel-fueled engines

Vehicles and power sources face increasingly stringent performance, emissions, and fuel economy standards driven by regulatory and market forces. The Powertrain Controls Section of the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) excels in the areas of powertrain and vehicle controls and supports the automotive industry in a broad range of efforts including:

  • Real-time modeling and control of combustion and exhaust treatment systems

    • Diesel, gasoline, natural gas, alternative fuels

    • SCR, LNT, DPF

    • Full-authority and limited-authority control

  • On-board diagnostics

    • Heavy- and light-duty

  • Control of hybrid powertrains

    • Electric, hydraulic, fuel cell

  • Design and build of custom electronic hardware for control

  • Control of automated manual transmission
