A way to control Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines targeted for series hybrid vehicles was researched by engineers at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).

Approach

  • Control fueling rate, boost level, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), intake charge and coolant temperatures

  • Maintain maximum rate of pressure rise (MRPR) in cylinder

Challenges

  • Monitor MRPR as feedback for control

  • High number of sensors and actuators

Tools Used

  • Rapid Prototyping Electronic Control System (RPECS™)

  • SwRI custom high speed data acquisition and analysis system (MRPR feedback)

The HCCI controller developed by SwRI is still in use today; it has been further developed and production derivatives are in operation on demonstration vehicles.
