	Using advanced environmental chamber testing, engineers monitor hot and cold engine and vehicle performance. Chassis and engine dynamometers in the cells aid in developing cold-start strategies, fuel injection calibration, and hot vehicle component evaluation.

A wide variety of laboratory and supplementary equipment at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) supports complex development projects for motorcycle, scooter, and recreation engines.

Motorcycle Test Cells

SwRI dedicates many of its test cells to motorcycle and other high-power density engines. These cells include advanced dynamometers for the testing of any production and racing engine. Sophisticated test cell data acquisition and control systems allow our engineers and scientists complete access to all types of engine data including high-speed in-cylinder combustion. Specialized and advanced facilities include:

• Engine dynamometer test cells

• Chassis dynamometers

• Vehicle mileage accumulation dynamometers

• Environmental cold and hot chambers

• Conditioned engine inlet air for temperature and humidity

• Combustion data acquisition systems

• Cylinder head flow bench

• Turbo test facility

• Fast response HC analyzer

• Real-time oil consumption measurement systems

• Radioactive tracer wear measurement system

• Air and liquid filtration testing and development laboratories

	Water-cooled, high-speed test engine, fully instrumented for individual cylinder pressure and control of air/fuel ratio

Our motorcycle and small engine facilities have been developed to provide our client with:

• Quicker turn-around

• Accurate motorcycle emissions test results

• Advanced "real-time" motorcycle emissions development

• Numerous testing capabilities

• Motorcycle durability, performance, and emissions testing and development

• Air- and water-cooled engine test capabilities
