To determine optimum fuel injector spray characteristics, Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) engineers evaluate and measure factors such as:

• Droplet size and spray shape

• Droplet velocities

• Spray jet cone angle

• Injector flow rate at various pulse widths

• Spray and droplet penetration rate

SwRI characterizes sprays from all types of spray nozzles and fuel injectors for a wide variety of applications, including:

• Port fuel injectors

• Throttle body injectors

• Direct in-cylinder injectors

Fuel and Oil Testing

SwRI offers complete services for research, development, and evaluation of engine oils used in diesel and gasoline engines. Facilities to evaluate lubricants against the American Petroleum Institute (API) "SL," "CG-4," "CH-4," and "C" lubricant categories, as well as the AAMA GF-1, GF-2, GF-3 are available. For European ACEA lubricant specifications, SwRI has installed dynamometer and bench test methods to evaluate service-fill lubricants for gasoline and diesel engines.

The Institute's extensive facilities are available to evaluate gasoline and diesel fuels with respect to injector deposits, combustion chamber deposits, intake valve deposits, and octane requirement increase. New design engine components are also evaluated to determine acceptability with current day lubricants. All types of automotive products are evaluated for performance in real-world conditions, such as coolants, engine oils, transmission fluids, electronic systems, belts, and fuel pumps.
