It is critical that car and light-duty truck manufacturers know what their competition is doing. These manufacturers need to benchmark their own products against those of their competitors. Benchmarking establishes a product place within the market and monitors the progress of the competitors. This project brief covers one of many such projects involving benchmarking engines, vehicles, or components.

The Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) Engine Research Department invested extensive capital equipment and technical resources to create an advanced engine mapping test cell. The latest technology in measurement equipment, sophisticated data acquisition, a high-speed motoring dynamometer, and automated engine controls provide highly accurate and repeatable engine performance data.

During this project, standard engine performance data were acquired including power, emissions, fuel economy, EGR flow rate, cylinder pressure, gas temperatures and pressures, and hot motoring friction. The engine was mapped over a variety of engine speeds and loads. This mapping was done first with the production engine control unit (ECU) and then with our own control system. Mapping with our own control system allowed data to be obtained at conditions outside the normal operating conditions of the production ECU. In addition to the engine data, the parent vehicle was placed through a battery of fuel economy and emissions tests prior to removing the engine. All of the measurement work was preceded by a 4,000-mile break in of the vehicle.
