Project Brief

The stand configuration incorporates PID closed-loop control of speed and pressure, real-time measurements of torque, speed, pressure, temperature, viscosity and reaction ring position for variable displacement pumps.

Transmission pump testing is conducted on a precision test stand for pump performance and comparative evaluations at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). The stand configuration incorporates PID closed-loop control of speed and pressure, real-time measurements of torque, speed, pressure, temperature, viscosity and reaction ring position for variable displacement pumps. Automated real-time data acquisition is performed through a HP3852 and HP332 computer system providing test point and data repeatability within 0.75 percent in a three-signal distribution.

The major components of the stand consist of a 20-hp AC motor, variable frequency drive, 1,000 in.-lb in-line rotary transformer, temperature compensated pressure transducer, parallel heater exchanger circuit, driven by a 5-hp motor and pump system, a coriolis type flow meter and 5 kW immersion heater.

Low temperature testing to -40°F is possible by incorporating a separate chiller circuit feeding the heat exchanger.
