Project Brief

SwRI gathered transmission torque loss data across the entire torque-speed envelope within which the transmission was required to perform.

Torque losses within manual transmissions vary significantly from manufacturer to manufacturer and from model to model. Based upon Southwest Research Institute's (SwRI) precision transmission testing capabilities, transmission torque loss data were obtained across the entire torque-speed envelope within which the transmission was required to perform.

All data taken were accurate within ±1 ft-lb for input torque conditions ranging to 350 ft-lbs. Typical transmission losses ranged from 5 to 20 ft-lbs.

SwRI processed this data using statistical techniques to model the torque losses. Equations describing the response surfaces were developed, and the speed and torque coefficients for these equations were calculated. Comparison of the coefficients provided valuable information on the characteristic torque losses associated with the various components.

Of particular interest to transmission manufacturers is the interrelationship between torque dependency and speed dependency, as certain transmission designs are better able to handle either light or heavy loading. To further support the information obtained from the empirical test data, the transmissions were disassembled, and physical measurements were made of the following:

  • Transmission case stiffness

  • Bearing housing materials

  • Geartrain assembly stiffness

  • Gear tooth configuration

  • Gear teeth in mesh

  • Speed ratios

  • Gear hardness

  • Shaft endplay

  • Gear tooth surface finish

  • Gear width

  • Angular backlash

  • Axial shaft endplay

  • Center support thickness

  • Inertia value determination

  • Lubrication oil type

  • Lubrication oil quantity
