The Assisted Blended Learning
Environment (ABLE), a web-based model for
determining the best blend for training, was
developed by SwRI staff.

Blended learning is the process of
selecting instructional strategies and media that support
different learning styles. The blend typically involves the
development of virtual and physical resources. Learning styles
refers to the many different ways in which people learn:
-
Visual
-
Spatial
-
Tactile
-
Lock-step
-
Discovery learning
-
Active experimentation
-
Concrete experience
With blended learning, a variety of learning
assignments and activities are created with the use of
technology and instructor and peer interaction.
Using Blended Learning in Training
Development
For many years, Southwest Research Institute
has implemented a blended learning approach to training
development. A typical example of an SwRI delivery method of
blended learning would be a combination of:
-
Technology-based (e.g., web-based
training) materials
-
Face-to-face sessions in a classroom,
lab, or field exercise
-
Practice on a simulator
Web-Based Tool
SwRI is developing an automated web-based
tool for assisting training staff to determine the most
appropriate “blend.” The goal of this tool is to increase
efficiency and contribute significantly to the development of
blended training solutions. The user-friendly tool guides users
through the decision process and is designed to assist
organizations that need to develop new training programs,
re-analyze current training, or convert extensive amounts of
existing training to more efficient delivery methods.
