Instructional Systems model graphic.

Based on requirements derived from the front-end analysis and incorporating technological concepts, SwRI recommends a simplified, flexible, and streamlined instructional systems design model.

Innovative and cost-effective solutions to modeling, simulation, training and performance improvement problems are offered by Southwest Research Institute. Protocol for development of an instructional systems design (ISD) include:

Analysis

Learning management system (LMS) research and development

  • Learning content management system (LCMS) research and development

  • Target audience analysis

  • Job and task analysis

  • Front end studies

  • Training needs assessment

  • Technology assessments and tradeoffs (cost, logistics, maintenance support, and facilities)

Design

  • Determine instructional strategies

  • Rapid prototyping

  • Online storyboarding

  • Design specifications

  • Media selection

  • Lesson plans

  • Course syllabus

Development

  • Produce instructional materials

  • Produce media elements

  • Develop courseware

  • Prepare tests

  • Formative evaluation

Implementation

  • Training support plans

  • Implement system functions

  • Equipment and facilities implementation plans

  • Train the trainers

Evaluation

  • Operational evaluation (internal and external)

Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement

  • Quality improvement is the continuous, organized creation of beneficial change to the system. The objective of quality improvement is to foster continuous improvement in the products and processes.

Instructional Systems Functions

  • Management

    • Directing or controlling instructional system development and operations

  • Support

    • Maintaining all parts of the system

  • Administration

    • Day-to-day processing and record keeping

  • Delivery

    • Bringing instruction to students

  • Evaluation

    • Gathering feedback data through formative, summative, and operational evaluations to assess system and student performance
