SwRI signs strategic collaborative agreement with Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau

Beijing, Aug. 20, 2010 — Southwest Research Institute (SwRI®) and Beijing Municipal Environment Protection Bureau (BMEPB) signed a strategic collaborative agreement on August 20, 2010.

Bruce Bykowski, vice president of SwRI’s Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division, and Robert Burrahm, the chief representative of SwRI’s Beijing office, attended the signing ceremony. From BMEPB, Feng Huisheng, deputy director; Li Kunsheng, chief of the vehicle emission control division; and Feng Yuqiao, dean of the Beijing Municipal Vehicle Emissions Control Centre, and other staff members attended the meeting.

Li Kunsheng said that as of the end of July 2010 there are 4.5 million vehicles in Beijing and that figure is increasing at the rate of about 2,000 per day. The number of vehicles is anticipated to reach approximately 6.5 million vehicles by 2015. Vehicle emission pollution will be one of the biggest contributors of air pollution and more help is needed to solve this problem. BMEPB and SwRI will develop a cooperative plan to address vehicle emission issues.

Meeting attendees visited the Beijing Municipal Vehicle Emissions Control Centre to discuss preliminary requirements.
