The JDQ 78A John Deere procedure, which simulates full-load field applications, evaluates the high-temperature, full-load performance of diesel engine oil in a John Deere 4045T emissions-certified engine.

JDQ 78A Diesel Engine Oil  Equipment and Procedure

A John Deere 4045T four-cylinder, 4.5-liter, four-cycle, turbocharged diesel engine with power rated at 93 kW at 2,400 rpm is used. The 400-hour test cycle consists of two parts: a 10-hour break-in period, followed by 390 hours of full-load operation at a sump temperature of 135 °C.

JDQ 78A Procedure Results

By recording performance, analyzing oil samples, and rating the engine parts, oil performance is evaluated through measurement of:

  • Oxidation stability

  • Total base number (TBN) depletion

  • Wear performance

  • Piston deposits

  • Oil consumption

The lubricant is analyzed for the following elements:

  • Ag (silver)

  • Al (aluminum)

  • B (boron)

  • Ba (barium)

  • Ca (calcium)

  • Cd (cadmium)

  • Cr (chromium)

  • Cu (copper)

  • Fe (iron)

  • K (potassium)

  • Mg (magnesium)

  • Mn (manganese)

  • Mo (molybdenum)

  • Na (sodium)

  • Ni (nickel)

  • P (phosphorus)

  • Pb (lead)

  • Sb (antimony)

  • Si (silicon)

  • Sn (tin)

  • Sr (strontium)

  • Ti (titanium)

  • V (vanadium)

  • Zn (zinc)

Pistons are rated for deposits using the modified CRC diesel piston rating system, and linear profilometer traces are made of used:

  • Cam lobes

  • Cam followers

  • Cylinder liners

  • Piston rings

  • The following are weighed:

  • Rod bearings

  • Tappets

  • Piston rings
