ASTM D6201 |
The ASTM D6201 Ford 2.3-Liter Intake Valve Deposit (IVD) Procedure is used to evaluate fuel-derived deposit formation. Both commercial and laboratory prepared fuels can be tested and these results can be used to evaluate current and future fuel compositions. This test is well suited to compare the predicted levels of fuel deposit formation with fired-engine results.
Fuel detergent additives and detergent additive concentrations can be compared using the ASTM D6201 procedure. Gasoline fuels containing up to 15% ethanol are blended with customer-supplied detergent additives in Southwest Research Institute’s (SwRI) state of the art fuel blending facility. The ASTM D6201 procedure is used to evaluate fuel deposit formation; however, a modified version of this procedure is used to evaluate the deposit removal (clean-up) performance resulting from elevated concentration of detergent additive.
TOP TIER (www.toptiergas.com) is an industry consortium that establishes a “standard for gasoline performance”. The ASTM D6201 procedure is one of the tests required by TOP TIER for certification. Certification also requires tests to be conducted using a Sequential Port Fuel Injection (SCPI) procedure and an Intake Valve Sticking (IVS) procedure. SwRI conducts all of these evaluations and offers comprehensive testing services that meet the requirements set forth by TOP TIER. ASTM D6201 Test ParametersThis test procedure utilizes a Ford 2.3-L engine on a dynamometer test stand. The engine features port fuel injection and computer controlled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR).
The following results of this test are reported:
