Southwest Research Institute offers the evaporative loss laboratory evaluation method, which determines the evaporative loss of lubricating oils using the NOACK evaporative tester.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) offers the evaporative loss laboratory evaluation method, CEC L-40-A-93, which determines the evaporative loss of lubricating oils using the NOACK evaporative tester. The method relates to one set of operating conditions but may be readily adapted to other conditions if required.

CEC L-40-A-93 Evaluation Parameters

A measured quantity of an oil sample is placed in an evaporation crucible, which is then heated to 250°C with a constant flow of air drawn through it for 60 minutes. The loss of mass of the oil is determined. The reproducibility of the method is dependent on the mandatory use of a standard apparatus and procedure. The use of automated equipment is permissible as long as the requirements established by the CEC Working Group, under whose jurisdiction this procedure falls, are satisfied. The evaporative loss is defined as that mass of oil lost when a sample is heated in a test crucible through which a constant flow of air is drawn.
