& Presentation
SwRI has developed and delivered engine trending and diagnostics familiarization for the F110, F100, TF34, F101, F108, and TF33 engines.
Courses provided technicians the required information to perform their assigned duties.
Engine Trending and Diagnostic Familiarization Courses
Engine trending and diagnostic (ET&D) familiarization courses have been provided by Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) for the following engines:
- F110
- F100
- TF34
- F101
- F108
- TF33
Subject Matter Expertise Used to Develop Courses for Specific Needs
Each course focused on concepts and software tutorials required for the customer to perform the assigned engine trending and diagnostics duties. The courses were designed to be engine specific using real life examples to illustrate the importance of identifying abnormal trends to prevent excessive damage to the engine. For each course, data pertaining to that particular engine type model was used and analyzed by the students. Those who have attended the courses include:
- Propulsion engineers
- Equipment specialists
- Engine management personal
- Engine mechanics
- Test cell operators
ET&D Course Content
The courses covered:
- Engine health monitoring system concepts relating to engine trending and diagnostics
- Job responsibilities for a technician
- Engine data flow into and out of the trending software
- Tutorials of commands used in the engine trending software
- Scheduled tasks relating to database integrity and software maintenance
- Relationships between engine signals and parameters
- Engine performance trending using the available software applications.
- Courses of action for the technician to take when detecting an abnormal trend.
Course Materials Provided
Several forms of course materials were developed for use during the course. These included:
- A training manual used as the main textbook for the course
- A quick reference guide used as a on the job memory aid
- Progress checks taken by the students to help the instructors gauge their understanding of the material presented
- An instructor guide / course slides used to keep track of what content should be presented during the course
- Electronic interactive exercises used by the students to guide their way through the software commands
- Electronic training manual used by students who have attended the course.
The electronic training manual was a web based version of what was provided in the course. The electronic version had the quick reference guide and interactive exercises imbedded in the document.
