With the diversity of science and engineering disciplines available at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), existing technologies are often used in novel applications.

Applying sophisticated digital signal processing techniques, SwRI engineers modified a sensor, routinely used in oil field exploration, to develop a seismic heart rate monitor for the U.S. Army. The device identifies a heartbeat quickly through multiple layers of clothing.
