Multi-protocol 2-wire digital interface module

Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) designed the Telecommunication Systems Analysis Position (TSAP) Data Collection System and the Multi-Protocol 2-Wire Digital Interface Module (DIM) as custom telecommunication hardware devices to monitor telephone lines. The system utilizes custom software to perform tasks such as:

  • Call processing

  • Remote networking

  • Fax processing

The call-processing capabilities enable the user to review and annotate intercepted transmissions.

The remote-networking capabilities enable the user to setup a TSAP Data Collection System at a remotely located site and upload the recorded telecommunications transmissions to a local site. Command and control capabilities of the remote TSAP Data Collection System may be performed locally through a custom Microsoft Management Console (MMC).

The fax-processing capabilities enable the user to process an intercepted Group 3 fax transmission into a viewable image.

All call records that have been collected with the TSAP Data Collection System may be further processed using the custom TSAP Traffic Analysis program. Using this program, the user may search the database of call records for various patterns of call traffic.

The TSAP Data Collection System utilizes custom circuits consisting of:

  • Microcontrollers

  • Programmable logic devices (PLDs)

  • Field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs)

  • Flash memory

  • Embedded firmware written in C, C++

  • Assembly to interface to five different telecommunications protocols

    • Plain-Old-Telephone-Service (POTS) 2-wire analog lines

    • Northern Telecom P-Phone 2-wire analog/digital hybrid lines

    • AT&T Digital Communications Protocol (DCP) 4-wire digital lines

    • Avaya (formerly Lucent) DCP 2-wire digital lines

    • Northern Telecom Meridian SL-100/SL-1 2-wire digital lines
