SwRI uses a variety of technologies to discover information and knowledge in large data sets. This foundation typically consists of methods that utilize statistics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, and database systems.
“Data mining” is an often overloaded term and used as a generalization of the previously mentioned technologies, as well as any number of other terms, such as:
- Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD)
- Business Intelligence (BI)
- Predictive Analytics
Hence, the term data analytics was chosen to encapsulate the use of these disciplines and reinforce their applicability to a variety of domains. The relationships between these realms and a representative subset of the analytic methods used in each are depicted in the following graphic:
