Engineers in the Intelligent Transportation Systems Department of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have expertise in numerous facets of mobile/wireless communications including:

  • Embedded communication systems design

  • Mobile network topology development

  • Advanced mobile communication technologies research

A core capability for mobile or wireless communications at SwRI is developing network infrastructures and embedded end devices for intelligent transportation systems (ITS), government agencies, and commercial partners.

Mobile/Wireless Communications Technologies

SwRI engineers develop and integrate technologies to fill the gap between new requirements and existing communication systems. Some of the technologies used to develop these solutions have included:

  • Wireless Ethernet networks

  • Mobile networking technologies (mobile IP)

  • Mobile ad hoc networks

  • Mobile satellite communications

  • Cellular communications

  • Wired ITS networks (T1, DSL, ISDN)

  • Embedded system development

  • Embedded sensor development

  • Embedded system communications

  • Integration with advanced traffic management systems (ATMS)
