Biometrics acquisition device experience at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) includes:
Tactical Biometrics Collection and Matching System (TBCMS)The U.S. Navy approached SwRI with a need to reduce the size, weight, and complexity of the biometrics collection kit it was using for vessel-boarding search-and-seizure operations. Within 11 months, SwRI developed, MIL-STD tested, and delivered the TBCMS. The enrolled biometrics can be immediately crosschecked with a watch list to identify persons of interest.
The TBCMS development team received a 2007 Naval Surface Warfare Center Technology-to-Sea Excellence Award for "outstanding technical or scientific merit relevant to the mission and thrusts of the Center."
Small, Modular, Multi-Modal System DevelopmentFor the U.S. Marines, SwRI engineers developed a modular, bolt-on, multi-modal biometrics collection and matching system for check-point security. The system includes a rugged, ultra-mobile PC that has all the functionality of TBCMS in a package half the size and weight. It has ports that enable attachment of:
SwRI’s in-house environmental test lab subjected the system to environmental (MIL-STD 810) and electromagnetic compatibility (MIL-STD 461) tests.
Biometrics Enrollment StationsUnder the direction of the U.S. Navy client, SwRI assisted in delivering biometrics enrollment stations to military bases across the country. SwRI developed both hardware and software to extend the root identity of government employees when they update or enroll their Common Access Card (CAC). The enhanced biometric data will be used at government facilities to improve access security.
