Rapid prototyping services using ABS plastic is offered at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) .

All you need is a 3D model converted into an .stl file (most CAD software have the capability to convert, some export to SLA, and some call it RP), or you can send the part file from PRO/E or SOLIDWORKS. Email the file to Jim Burkes, jburkes@swri.org, or phone (210) 522-2634, to let him know the details.

SwRI can also convert your 2D drawings into 3D models.

The FDM 2000 produces fully functional prototypes made from ABS plastic. The resulting ABS parts have 85% of the strength of an actual injection molded part.

Larger parts are possible by bonding multiple pieces together.

The specifications for the FDM 2000 include:

• Envelope: 10" x 10" x 10"

• Accuracy: ±0.005"

• Thinnest wall: 0.010"

• Materials available at this time: ABS

• Colors: Black & White

The ABS part can be used for investment casting.
