While microencapsulation, surface enhancement, and coatings for medical applications are routinely performed at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), we also specialize in new material development and process improvement.

New materials are developed for medical devices, such as ultrasound coupling or unique tissue coupling requirements for biosensors. Sometimes materials are developed to do specific in vivo biological functions or immuno-histochemistry studies, including tissue engineering applications.

Materials are also formulated to simulate human tissue to assist the development or testing of a medical device. These materials can be used to simulate arterial blood flow, fatty tissue, skin, and specific body parts that a device may need for interaction purposes.
