The first microprocessor-based dual thermistor cardiac output computer was developed at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) from concept to manufacturing.

Conventional cardiac output computers measure the injectate temperature externally, or outside the body, before it is injected into the catheter. As part of this product, SwRI software engineers developed an algorithm for a cardiac output computer that determines cardiac output based on pulmonary artery blood temperature distribution and injectate temperature, measured within the right atrium using a second temperature thermistor.

Building on our experience in cardiovascular monitoring, SwRI's computer scientists developed an inexpensive, noninvasive, patented method for measuring continuous cardiac output, combining sophisticated signal processing techniques with commonly available patient data to measure the heart's pumping ability.
