Profile of SwRI

During its more than 65 years of operation, Southwest Research Institute has grown from a single building to almost 100 major facilities exceeding 2 million square feet of laboratories, workshops, test facilities, and offices.

SwRI is located on more than 1,200 acres within the city limits of San Antonio. Originally ranchland, much of the Institute's grounds is maintained in its native state. Staff and visitors often see deer, roadrunners, wild turkeys, jackrabbits, rattlesnakes, and other animals native to South Texas.

More than 2,973 scientists, engineers, and support staff work in modern facilities using state-of-the-art equipment.

Technical capabilities are augmented by a video teleconference center and by the Thomas Baker Slick Memorial Library, which houses more than 60,000 books, 400,000 volumes of periodicals, and more than 50,000 electronic scientific and technical resources.

SwRI supports its employees and their families with a wide range of services and recreational facilities. These include recreational sports facilities, social events, and a full-service credit union.

SwRI employees hold excellent qualifications, combined with a keen understanding of the applied research and development process and the responsibilities of client service. These strengths have contributed to Southwest Research Institute's national and international accomplishments.
