QUALIFICATIONS: Assistant Directors should have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills as well as proven success in building research programs at the Institute or at another contract research organization. In prior management positions, the person should have the capability of leading others and administering their technical and professional needs. A Bachelor's degree in engineering or science appropriate for the department's activities and relevant management training course work or experience is required. In addition, the assistant director should have completed the Institute supervisory training program. It is normally required that the Assistant Director should have completed formal university-level management training courses or other similar training. RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsibilities include technical review of deliverables, management oversight for larger projects handling the technical and business functions of the project. Organize and integrate personnel, sometimes from several Divisions, including subcontractors. When designated, acts for the Director in his or her absence. Responsible for recommending staffing changes consistent with the current and future personnel needs of the department. Leads research and development activities within the department in area of responsibility. Leads promotion of new business directions for the department in coordination with Section Manager(s), Department Director, and Senior Staff; interacts with key department clients and potential clients. Leads planning of future program development and identification of resource needs (people, facilities, equipment, and capabilities) in coordination with Division Vice President, Department Director, and Section Managers. Establishes methodologies to improve the department work practices for improved efficiency, promotion, and conduct of department business. The Assistant Director will participate in systems, databases and network design programs primarily within Aerospace applications.
