QUALIFICATIONS: Individuals must be recognized as a critical resource, having established a reputation for technical excellence. Individuals must fulfill principal level engineer responsibilities and have experience of five years at that level. An advanced degree in a chosen technical field is desirable. Individuals should also assume a training and development responsibility for less experienced technical staff. RESPONSIBILITIES:
The staff engineer takes the lead in the promotion of new projects and programs in area of expertise and establishing future technology needs based on interaction with clients and potential clients and expert knowledge of the technology. He or she oversees the preparation, presentation, and follow-up of major proposals normally requiring a high degree of creativity and technical organization. He or she contributes to department and divisional planning activities by providing insight on future technological needs in areas of expertise and leads in the development of new division and Institute capabilities. He or she reviews research outcomes and recommendation of more junior technical staff to make final assessments. Manages major research projects and has full responsibility and control over the time schedule, budget, and technical objectives of the project. He or she is instrumental in acquiring outside funded research work for a number of junior researchers. He or she applies advanced scientific or engineering principles, theories, and concepts in developing original research programs and solution to complex research problems where little or no precedence exists and innovation is required. The Staff Engineer will participate in systems, databases and network design programs primarily within Aerospace applications.
