QUALIFICATIONS: Directors have demonstrated the ability to successfully lead a major business activity and attain technical and business objectives. Through prior management experience, individuals have shown the ability to successfully build a program and lead research personnel at all levels. An engineering or science degree appropriate for the department activities is normally required. The individual should have completed the Institute supervisory training program and attended university-level management training courses or other similar training. RESPONSIBILITIES:
In the Automation and Data Systems Division, Directors manage and lead a technical department. They are responsible for the overall quality of the work, promotional activity, financial well being, and the employment and development of a competent staff. The normal scope of activities will involve a total staff of more than 30 personnel. The Director leads in the successful promotion and execution of technical or administrative areas and programs consistent with the mission of the Division and the Institute.
An individual at the Director level performs the following functions:
- Leads the promotion of new business directions for the department in coordination with vice president, section managers, and senior staff, and interacts directly with key department clients and potential clients.
- Leads in planning for future program development and resource needs (people, facilities, equipment and new or enhanced capabilities) in coordination with division vice president and section managers.
- Establishes methodologies to improve department work practices leading to improved efficiencies in the promotion and conduct of department business.
- Recommends staff hiring consistent with current and future staffing needs.
- Leads research and development and testing activities as appropriate.
- Reviews and approves reports and proposals issued by the department and works with department staff to provide resources to meet project technical, cost, and schedule objectives.
- Encourages development of personnel through appropriate program assignments, participation in educational training activities, and establishment of personal development goals.
- Interprets and applies Institute operational policies to department personnel.
