QUALIFICATIONS:   Principal Scientists have a background in physics, biosciences, or related scientific areas. They are critical division resources in several dimensions, proceeding from 12 or more years of research and development project and promotional experience, including development of advanced concepts for internal research, proposal efforts, preparation, presentation, and follow-up of large proposals. In addition, these individuals are a resource in program development efforts, and contribute directly to research and development efforts with clients and their professional community. An advanced degree in a technical field is highly desirable. Individuals should also have led instruction in one of the technical or program/project management courses offered by the Institute and/or taught a university-level technical course.

RESPONSIBILITIESThis individual is experienced in developing and leading complex projects. The individual is responsible for the technical effort, and in developing innovative solutions to client problems. A Principal Scientist is well versed in the application of advanced theory, concepts and practices, and provides significant technical leadership to hardware/software programs.

In the Automation and Data Systems Division, an individual at this level:

  • Has knowledge and expertise in a wide range of current and emerging systems, products and techniques, helps the client and development team with new innovative possibilities to meet client objectives. 
  • Designs, develops, enhances or re-engineers complicated information technology systems. 
  • Takes a technical leadership role and personally performs complex tasks. 
  • Performs requirements analyses, feasibility studies or cost/benefit analyses for presentation to client. 
  • Designs, plans, schedules and supervises work progress to meet client objectives. 
  • Prepares and presents reports to clients. 
  • Solves highly complex technical problems where use of creative, imaginative solutions are required. 
  • Performs technical evaluation of assigned personnel.
