QUALIFICATIONS:  A Principal Technical Specialist is a critical resource in several dimensions derived from twelve to fifteen years of related work experience, including development of advanced concepts in non-technical areas. A Principal Technical Specialist is a resource in the program development efforts, and contributes to and directs presentation of project efforts to clients and the professional community. A four-year degree in a relevant field and ten years of directly applicable experience is necessary. An advanced degree in a field of specialization is highly desirable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:   The Principal Technical Specialist position reflects an extraordinary accumulation of experience and a company knowledge and capability in one chosen field of specialization and in project promotion and management. Individuals are increasingly recognized throughout their division and the Institute for creativity, functional expertise, and their contribution to the department's and division's business goals.

In the Automation and Data Systems Division, an individual at this level: 

  • Accomplishes advanced work within field of specialty. Increasingly recognized as highly qualified in his/her specialty and possesses similar reputation with peers and clients in the professional community.
  • Takes the lead in expanding the application of new concepts and technologies and contributing to program development activities.
  • Consults with management in the area leading to the successful promotion and completion of research and development project.
  • Leads in planning, promoting and managing projects of significant size and complexity, often with staff of very technical backgrounds, for more than one client, assuming full responsibility for the successful completion within the financial, technical, and time objectives. Is instrumental in acquiring project work to support a number of junior staff members.
  • Makes assessment on broad perspectives of related technology.
  • Maintains contact throughout the technical or business community, stays abreast of developments within the specialty, and seeks opportunities to collaborate on projects both within the Institute and within the external professional society.
  • Accomplishes special multifaceted assignments as directed by management.
