Impact Dynamics Facility

The Mechanical Engineering Division operates the Impact Dynamics Facility, one of the largest impact testing and research facilities in the world. The 15,000 square foot facility, located in Leander, Texas, has a two-stage light-gas launcher featuring a 38-mm launch tube with the ability to reach velocities close to 7 km/s. The facility was previously operated by The University of Texas at Austin for the U.S. Army as a University Affiliated Research Center. Capabilities will include fabrication of components for research in hypervelocity effects and launch and fabrication of advanced prototypes for hard-to-machine materials.
