SwRI's Signal Exploitation and Geolocation Division receives ISO 9001 certification

For immediate release.

San Antonio, Texas -- June 28, 2000 -- Southwest Research Institute's® (SwRI®)Signal Exploitation and Geolocation Division has been certified as meeting ISO 9001 standards. The certification, issued by the notified body Lloyd's Register Quality Assurance, headquartered in Hoboken, New Jersey, covers design, development, production, installation, and servicing activities.

ISO 9001, initiated in the late 1980s by the International Organization for Standardization, is a set of international standards used to certify a quality system for the development of products, starting with the initial design through production and servicing.

To achieve certification, the SwRI division had to set up a quality system within the guidelines of ISO, develop procedures for doing business in accordance with those guidelines, and demonstrate that it followed those procedures over a period of time and for a number of different projects.

"Current projects from Canada and Australia specify certification to ISO 9001 as the quality system, and requests for proposals from European countries are specifying ISO 9001 as the required quality system," says Tim Millington, director of the division's Production Systems and Software Engineering Department and the lead coordinator of the ISO initiative.

"With this certification, the Signal Exploitation and Geolocation Division is prepared to meet these requirements as well as continuously improve our operations to deliver the quality designs, products, and services our clients expect," he said.

Southwest Research Institute has been a leader in radio frequency signal exploitation and geolocation system development for more than four decades. SwRI provides advanced communications signals acquisition and recognition, direction finding, and geolocation systems to government, military, and commercial clients in the U.S. and around the world.

Other ISO-certified programs at SwRI include the Automotive Products and Emissions Research Division, the Engine and Vehicle Research Division, and the Bioengineering Department.
