Southwest Research Institute seminar to explore Internet's future

San Antonio -- March 20, 2001 -- Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) will showcase future Internet applications for research and education in an "Internet2" seminar scheduled March 28.

The all-day event highlights SwRI's investment in the national organization that will shape the future of the Internet.

Featured speaker is Ted Hanss, Internet2 national director of applications development. He coordinates activities aimed at building and deploying the next generation of network-based applications in support of research and education.

Internet2 is a consortium, led by more than 180 universities in partnership with industry and government, working to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. The consortium recreates the partnership among academia, industry and government that fostered today's Internet in its infancy.

SwRI is the only Internet2 member in San Antonio and one of only a few corporate and affiliate members in the nation that hold policy-shaping Collaboration Site status. Others include such entities as Microsoft, IBM, Jet Propulsion Laboratories, and NASA's Goddard and Marshall Space Flight Centers.

Primary goals of Internet2 are to create a leading-edge network capability for the national research community, enable revolutionary Internet applications, and ensure the rapid transfer of new network services and applications to the broader Internet community.

Jim Hokanson, event chairman and director of SwRI's Information Technology Center, said, "This seminar will provide a forum for our staff to learn about Internet2 technologies and funding sources, and to explore collaboration opportunities with other San Antonio-based research organizations."

Seminar sessions explore the usefulness of Internet2 in applications such as large-scale data transfer, distributed computing and high-quality multimedia, for engineers and scientists working in disciplines ranging from volcanology to space weather.
