San Antonio -- February 13, 2004 -- Southwest Research Institute has established an international office in Beijing. Staff members, clients and guests will celebrate the grand opening of the facility April 20.
The liaison office, overseen by the SwRI Office of Automotive Engineering, will help facilitate automotive business opportunities in China including coordinating client and contract inquiries and offering program support.
"SwRI's automotive expertise is world-renowned," said Walter Groff, senior vice president of the Office of Automotive Engineering. "We have several ongoing projects and programs with clients in China. This new office will allow us to provide our clients with more personal interaction as well as help us to expand our presence internationally."
Representing SwRI in the Beijing office is Nian Sun, an SwRI senior research engineer with more than 35 years of experience in design and management of engine performance and bench test laboratories. He also has experience in developing new test procedures and equipment for lubricant evaluation and in data acquisition, control systems and test data measurements for engine testing.

The Office of Automotive Engineering oversees the technical expertise of SwRI's automotive technology divisions: the Fuels and Lubricants Research Division and the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division. Both divisions are certified to ISO 9001:2000 "Quality Management Systems - Requirements," accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:1999 "General Requirements for the Competence of Testing and Calibration Laboratories" and certified to ISO 14001:1996 "Environmental Management Systems." Also, both divisions have achieved Ford Tier 1 status for providing engineering services and have earned the Ford Q1 Quality Award.
