SwRI expands engine consulting services

San Antonio -- July 1, 2004 -- Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) has expanded its engine consulting services to include the entire automotive powertrain. Previously encompassing engine design, development and product planning, the newly enlarged program includes engines, fuels, lubricants, transmissions and other powertrain-related technologies.

"The powertrain consulting program continues to provide the comprehensive services for which the Institute is noted and that our clients have come to expect. In response to participant requests, we have increased the number of topics that are covered during the program," said Dr. Thomas W. Ryan III, program manager and Institute engineer in the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division at SwRI.

Program members can select engine- and powertrain-related topics from an SwRI-provided list of presentation titles and abstracts. The topics addressed are determined by individual member interests, general automotive industry concerns, and SwRI-designated items of interest. Program services include individual consultation on automotive issues important to individual participants.

SwRI has introduced the more comprehensive program to a range of companies in Europe, Asia and the United States, including light- and heavy-duty engine manufacturers, transmission and component suppliers, and oil and fuel companies. Recent focused topics include measurement of extremely low engine emissions, high-efficiency and durable gasoline engine technology and current trends in engine design and analysis.

The powertrain consulting services program includes the sharing of SwRI's extensive automotive-related expertise; detailed replies to member questions; periodic consulting visits to the member company; copies of SwRI internal research reports; timely reports on U.S. emissions legislation; and reports and presentations addressing other topics of interest to member companies.

As an independent, multidisciplinary research, development and testing organization, SwRI provides a nonbiased, third-party perspective. The SwRI Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division has achieved certification to ISO 9001, an internationally recognized quality standard, and ISO 14001, an environmental management system.
