Southwest Research Institute wins Air Force Materiel services contract
San Antonio -- July 5, 2005 -- Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) has been named a prime contractor in a Design and Engineering Support Program (DESP) providing up to $1.9 billion in services, primarily for the U.S. Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC). SwRI leads a team of 25 companies, including many small and disadvantaged businesses.
"We are thrilled to be one of the 10 prime contractors that the AFMC selected from among 29 bidders for this very important contract," said Walt Downing, SwRI executive vice president. SwRI will be tasked to address technical areas such as laboratory services, technical documentation, courseware development, systems design, engineering, development, software and firmware, maintenance, repair, operational support, process modeling, analysis, re-engineering, environmental, health and safety. In addition to the AFMC, the newly awarded DESP II contract may be used to provide engineering support to other Air Force and Army commands, Department of Defense agencies and other government entities.
DESP II, a sequel to the previous DESP contract, was created to meet future diversified technical needs by providing engineering and high-level technical services in support of all AFMC weapons systems, components, and support equipment. The program will focus on incorporating proven technologies and methods into Air Force systems and processes. SwRI has participated in five previous rounds of similar contracts since 1987 and has done 270 tasks worth more than $200 million. Under terms of the indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity contract, the SwRI team will provide needed services through 2012 to the AFMC and other federal agencies.
