SwRI vice president named SAE Fellow

San Antonio – January 24, 2008 – Nigel Gale, vice president of the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division of Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), has been named a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineers International (SAE).

New SAE Fellows will be recognized at a reception and dinner during the 2008 SAE World Congress in Detroit, April 14-17, 2008.

The Fellow grade of membership recognizes and honors members who have made a significant impact on the society's mobility technology through research, innovation or creative leadership. Candidates are elected from nominations submitted by SAE Members and Fellows. Only about 20 Fellows are chosen each year.

Gale came to SwRI in 1987 and was promoted to division vice president in 1996. Gale has 40 years of experience in engine design, research and development with engine manufacturers and consultants. He has earned five patents and authored several papers in engine design and development. Gale is also a Fellow of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.

Since he became vice president, the Engine, Emissions and Vehicle Research Division has grown under Gale's leadership by a factor of four and has generated many technologies that have been adopted by the industry for the reduction of exhaust emissions and the improvement of fuel economy.

Gale holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from City University in London, England.
