Background
Southwest Research Institute has become a leader in offering
unique opportunities for students pursuing a career as engineers, scientists, or analyst
focusing on scientific research and development. The Institute performs contract research
for private and industrial firms, both foreign and domestic, and for federal, state, and
local government agencies. The Student Employment Program helps solidify career decisions
and offers both participants and the Institute staff an opportunity to evaluate potential
for a full-time research career. Experience has demonstrated that successful participants
are often invited to apply for a regular, full-time position.
Eligibility
Student employment opportunities at Southwest Research
Institute are primarily for upper-division undergraduate or graduate students whose skills
are applicable to current projects. Candidates must be enrolled in good standing on a
minimum one- half time basis or, if employed in the summer program, must intend to enroll
for the Fall semester at an accredited educational institution. To be competitive,
applicants should have a GPA of 3.0/4.0 (a current transcript is required).
Employment Opportunities
for College Students
Full-Time Summer Employment
Each year the Institute hires a number of students for
temporary, full-time summer employment. Applications for this program are accepted only
during the Spring semester from undergraduate and graduate students nationwide. All
candidates must be returning to school in the Fall. The screening and selection process
for the Summer program runs between February and May of each year and reaches its peak
around Spring break.
Cooperative Education Programs
Cooperative Education (Co-op), a partnership between a student
and an employer offered by a number of colleges and universities, permits alternating
school attendance and employment for specific periods of time. The Co-op combines
education with experience that enhances the student's professional skills. Work
assignments relate to the student's classroom studies and provide educational resources
not available in the school environment.
Part-Time Employment During the School Year
Occasionally, temporary, part-time student positions become
available during the school year. These positions are listed with placement offices at
local colleges and universities as they occur, and applications are accepted by referral
through those offices from students currently enrolled at least half-time.
Application Procedures
The student employment program and corresponding application
process is completely independent from other Institute application processes. All
correspondence should be directed to the Student Employment Coordinator. To obtain an
application or additional information, contact: Student Employment Coordinator, Southwest
Research Institute, Department OC, P.O. Drawer 28510, San Antonio, TX 78228-0510.
