PRINCIPAL ENGINEER/PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST (ENG & MATERIAL SCIENCES)

Job Summary:
- Office-based work, laboratory work, site visits, and inspections; review and evaluate safety analyses for the operation of uranium enrichment facilities, fuel fabrication facilities (including mixed oxide facilities), spent fuel pools, dry cask spent fuel storage facilities, and spent fuel reprocessing facilities; conduct independent risk analyses of these nuclear facilities using proprietary and commercially available computer codes; prepare technical reports and oral presentations; develop new client contacts, exploit existing business opportunities, prepare proposals and project plans to conduct applied research and development and regulatory analyses related to the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.
Education/Experience:
- Requires a MS or a PhD degree in Materials Science or Materials Engineering, Nuclear or Chemical Engineering, or Physical Chemistry with at least a 3.5 GPA. . Must have 10 to 15 years experience investigating technical issues related to the design, manufacture, irradiation, storage, transportation, and re-processing of low-enriched nuclear fuels used in light water reactors. Must be qualified to function as a Senior Criticality Safety Engineer (SCSE) as defined by ANSI/ANS-8.20 or NRC Regulatory Guide 3.71. Must have demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: (a) physical and chemical methods used to reprocess spent nuclear fuel (b) physical and chemical processes that affect the stability of spent nuclear fuel stored in dry casks (c) methods for examining and characterizing post-irradiated intact fuel rods, clad, and fuel pellets (d) criteria for designing and using accident tolerant fuels in light water reactors (e) nuclear criticality safety of fuel debris under postulated reactor accident scenarios (f) nuclear criticality safety at reprocessing facilities under accident scenarios.
